Sequim: Day-Trippin’ Hub of the Pacific Northwest

Who doesn’t love a good day trip? Being able to leave your house in the morning and return in the evening—mini vacation included—makes for a pretty perfect day at any age.

One of the many things locals love about living on the Olympic Peninsula is just how many incredible day trips are right at our fingertips. In this series, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite excursions, along with tips to help you make the most of each one.

So come along for the fun—this is just the beginning.

Why Sequim?

Sequim (pronounced Skwim) is more than just a charming town—it’s the perfect home base for exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Nestled at the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula, Sequim sits between the Olympic Mountains to the south and the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north. Around here, you’ll often hear the phrase “from the mountains to the sea,” and it couldn’t be more accurate.

Within just a couple of hours, you can:

  • Hike scenic mountain trails
  • Hunt for sea glass along peaceful beaches
  • Explore tide pools filled with tiny marine life
  • Or even venture into Canada for the day

It’s the kind of place where adventure feels effortless—and that’s exactly why so many people fall in love with it.

The “Blue Hole” Effect

Sequim has a little secret… and locals aren’t shy about sharing it.

Thanks to its position in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, Sequim enjoys a uniquely dry and sunny microclimate—affectionately known as the “Blue Hole.” While some areas of the Pacific Northwest receive over 100 inches of rain each year, Sequim averages just 16–17 inches annually. That means more sunshine, more outdoor time, and more opportunities to enjoy everything this area has to offer—year-round.

Lavender Capital of North America

Sequim isn’t just known for its views—it’s famous for its lavender.

With over 20 lavender farms throughout the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, the area has earned the title Lavender Capital of North America, thanks to a climate similar to the south of France.

The annual Lavender Festival takes place during the third week of July, when the entire town seems to glow in shades of purple. If you prefer a quieter experience, the harvest season continues through August—perfect for a more relaxed visit.

Many farms offer:

  • U-pick lavender experiences
  • Free or low-cost tours
  • Locally made lavender products

Tip: B & B Family Farm is a local favorite and a great place to start.

Festivals, Music & Community Vibes

Sequim knows how to celebrate.

From the Irrigation Festival to Lavender Weekend and everything in between, there’s always something happening. The sense of community here is strong—and visitors feel it right away.

Live music is woven into daily life, with performances popping up at:

  • Local wine bars
  • Restaurants
  • Outdoor venues

Food with a View

Whether you’re grabbing something quick or planning a scenic picnic, Sequim delivers.

From cozy cafés and bakeries to farmers markets and coffee shops, there’s no shortage of great options. And the best part? You’re almost always eating with a view.

Perfect picnic spots include:

  • Along the beach
  • Atop a mountain overlook
  • Out on one of the local spits

Even a quick stop in town can come with a surprisingly stunning backdrop.

Local tip: Be sure to check hours before heading out—some spots adjust their schedules seasonally. A little flexibility goes a long way here.

Why People Love Calling Sequim Home

Sequim isn’t just a destination—it’s a lifestyle. It’s where you can wake up and decide—mountains, beach, or both? Where day trips don’t require planning weeks in advance. And where every outing feels just a little bit like a getaway.

For many, that’s exactly what turns a visit into something more permanent.

Wrapping It Up

Sequim isn’t just the place you visit—it’s the place you start from. And the best part? You don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve gone somewhere special.
